Newbie question: What is the nature of csf?

I recently discovered csf and am very pleasantly surprised. It is a jewel.

My questions are not related to any problem, it is just simple curiosity. The system is unusual in two respects:

(1) Who owns csf? It seems to be in the middle between Open Source Software and commercial. The package seems to be distributed in binary form, and only in this site. I guess they get an income by selling and supporting the GUI front ends?

(2) Is it a daemon? (I don't see the process). An application? Does it become part of the TCP/IP stack in Linux kernel?

TIA

When I wrote that I was referring to RedHat/CentOS version 6. On version 7 it is a service.

So the question is: On a system like CentOS version 6, what kind of process is csf? In order to perform firewall functions, it must become part of the TCP/IP stack somehow, correct?
