We get this when attempting to update ClamAV via the MailScannerFE. I've tried everything I can find, without any luck so far:

By the way, I found that /usr/local/etc/freshclam.conf was empty, so I tried copying the contents in from another server. Still a no-go. And yes, we have plenty of room on the server's drive partitions.

Just got this same symptom on another server, not sure what to do about this one. Some clamAV updates go well, others don't.

All our servers are:

cPanel 11.25.0-R43473 - WHM 11.25.0 - X 3.9
REDHAT Enterprise 5.5 i686 standard

And we are running the most recent versions of MailScanner

We haven't seen this exact problem before, though we have seen a somewhat similar problem when /usr/local/etc/clamd.conf was empty - have you checked that? Have you tried to reinstall clamd manually by following the instructions on our website?

Yes, on each server where we have this issue, I have found that clamd.conf is empty, but it does not help to replace this (e.g. from another server), as soon as we try to update again via WHM, the clamd.conf file is wiped/blanked again.

I will try to re-install manually. But shouldn't I un-install the old installation first? If so, how do I do this?

CORRECTION: I finally spotted the instructions at the very bottom about uninstalling, etc. Thanks much.

After uninstalling, I follow the instructions found here:

Then I get to this line:
./configure --disable-zlib-vcheck

... and the following occurs (note that I get this same error even here: "unable to guess system" and "error: cannot guess build type;"):

cPanel.net reminded me that we have a few utilities in the server chattr locked and this was causing the issue. Their response:

Your /usr/bin/strings was chattr +i, which was preventing binutils from being installed correctly. The following series of commands seems to have resolved this.

chattr -i /usr/bin/strings
yum -y install binutils
