received this error when doing update

ERROR 1045 (28000): Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: YES)

and in Mailwatch now read

Warning: mysql_pconnect() [function.mysql-pconnect]: Access denied for user 'mailwatch'@'localhost' (using password: YES) in /usr/local/cpanel/whostmgr/docroot/3rdparty/mailwatch/functions.php on line 508
Could not connect to database: Access denied for user 'mailwatch'@'localhost' (using password: YES)

WHM 11.23.2 cPanel 11.23.6-S27698

I did a few days ago update mysql root pw in preparation for WHM 11.24.2 - X 3.9 after reading Eric Gregory CPanel alert "Important Notice about MySQL and Automated ProcessKillers with cPanel 11.24"

fixed - found the original mysql root pw and changed it back - Mailwatch working again

Usually MySQL errors like that are due to having non-alphanumeric characters in the mysql root password, and changing the mysql to something with ONLY letters and numbers, then reinstalling MSFE, will remedy that.
