Newbie Question R.E. CSF and installation / setup?

Post by PhoenixUK »

Hi All,

Please don't shoot me down, I'm still learning all of the masses of WHM/cPanel features etc for my personal VPS but I've had an issue with which I've been speaking with cPanel support about.

It's in relation to when I have "cphulkd" enabled, as my broadband provider here in the UK doesn't give you the opportunity to purchase static IP addresses, unless you're a business user, of which I'm not.

Therefore cphulkd at times is locking me out based on my IP address if it changes due to say a lost router connection to my broadband service and this is causing me major headaches.

cPanel support have said the following to me;
Hello Robert,

Thank you for your response. I've logged into your server and verified that it is cPHulk that was blocking you again.

I've added your newest IP address to the whitelist. However, as you've seen, this is just a temporary solution since cPHulk only allows whitelisting specific IP addresses. The next time your IP address changes, it's possible you'll get locked out again if you accidentally enter the wrong credentials.

I would recommend you look into adding CSF, which is a 3rd party product for which we don't provide support, but it is free of cost and integrates well with WHM:

*he inserted http: // configserver. com/cp/csf.htm here*

This product properly protects dynamic IP addresses. Once this is installed and configured you'd disable cPHulk and depend on CSF instead.

I hope this information is helpful.

Please let us know if you have any further questions or issues.

Best regards,

Therefore my questions are, after reading CSF's install.txt file, I'm still a little at loss as to how it's installed; would I be correct in saying this is via an SSH program which I use PuTTY? This is due to being on a windows laptop *don't scream at me, it's personal choice*.

Then my next question is how can I set-up CFS to maximise my chance of hitting the correct settings so I don't bugger up anything else related to my VPS, connected sites that I personally host on my VPS and so forth?

Any help, guidance or advice would be dearly appreciated indeed in the above matters.

I look forward to hearing from somebody in due course.

Yes - installed using an SSH program like PuTTY. Make sure you pay attention to testing the available iptables modules.

You would be helped considerably by reading and understanding the CSF readme (http://download.configserver.com/csf/readme.txt) before installing.

Also from the install doc "csf installation for cPanel and DirectAdmin is preconfigured to work on those servers with all the standard ports open".

Since this is a "Peer support forums for ConfigServer Scripts" responses may be limited.

Finally - the cPanel Service Package offered by ConfigServer (http://www.configserver.com/cp/cpanel.html) IMO is well worth the money and will give you a wealth of information and the ability to ask questions on their support desk.
